1.5 Differentiate teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities |
Through my university studies of the core differentiation topic 'Differentiation for Diverse Learners' and elective studies in 'Educating Gifted and Creative Learners', as well as through my experiences as a relief teacher and pre-service student teacher, I have "develop[ed] teaching activities that incorporate differentiated strategies to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities" as stated by AITSL sub-standard 1.5. Differentiation is at the heart of inclusive education and should be embedded in all successful teaching and learning. In my exploration of differentiation I have developed the following understanding:
Differentiation is the process of modifying, evolving and expanding teaching philosophy, principles and practice to be inclusive of the diverse needs of all students, and to provide each child with the appropriate challenge required to learn effectively.
I have provided the following key articles of evidence to demonstrate my ability in differentiating for the diverse needs of all students.
Differentiation and Inclusion PortfolioThis article, located on my professional blog, provides an in-depth discussion of differentiation and inclusion including definitions of terminology, an analysis of a specific school's differentiation profile, and professional reflections of differentiation used in my own classroom.

Differentiated Lesson PlansThe following is two examples of lesson plans I have devised demonstrating my ability in using a number of the key principles of differentiation. These include: the development of learning objectives and essential questions, flexible/tier grouping, differentiating by interest, readiness and learner profile, the use of learning menus, and appropriate assessment, including pre-assessments to inform teaching.
