Professional Portfolio

Welcome to my digital professional teaching portfolio - this site is designed to demonstrate key elements of my developing teaching practice that align with the proficient professional standards of the AITSL Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

Please note: I am currently in the process of updating all evidence and portfolio elements to align with the proficient teaching standards rather than graduate standards. I am also curating evidence for additional sub-standards. Please consider this site as 'under construction' during this time.

Greetings, my name is Amelia Smart, welcome to my digital teaching portfolio.

I am a graduate teacher from Flinders University in South Australia, having competed my studies in Primary Education (R-7) and a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in English. I am very passionate about education and the bright future for young Australians as citizens of a global community.  Constructivism, as well as considering the broad, holistic needs of the child is at the foundation of my teaching practice. The wellbeing of students, and the meaningful relationships between teacher and student are paramount to successful education and learning. I am a great believer in the power technology can have in transforming teaching and learning both inside and outside of the classroom, as well as the importance of creativity being integrated throughout a curriculum.

My broad view of education is that it is for everyone, and that it should be equitable and non-discriminative. I am also of the belief that children best learn in a student-centred, social environment that fosters long-term, positive relationships.

A little about myself, I was born in the UK, and migrated to Australia in 1997. Since then I have lived happily in the southern suburbs of Adelaide, Australia. I would certainly consider myself an explorer, having travelled to many places both in my childhood and adulthood. Importantly, in my travelling experiences I have attended 7 different primary schools in both the UK and Australia, 2 high schools, and 1 university; Along with practical experiences at four primary school sites, and my current role as a relief teacher, my experiences of schools has become extensive, and I believe this has aided me in becoming the social person that I now am. I believe that constructive relationship building is at the very heart of all that we do, whether it is in context of school, or just in life. For me, school is about giving students the necessary skills and attitudes to thrive in all avenues of life that they choose to walk, particularly with a growth mindset to their own development.

The purpose of this site is to provide an overview of my developing practice in context of the AITSL standards for teaching. Key examples and evidence can be found under the 'Professional Standards for Teaching' link at the top of this page. My personal philosophy of teaching statement can also be found on this site. For further information, please do not hesitate to contact me, or to follow my professional blog.
